I got ya, I use a Mac also but here are some basic steps you should double check:
- Newest Version (not snapshot 1.12.2)
- You have set server resource packs to 'Enabled' or 'Prompt' (click on the server once, hit edit then you will see Server Resource Packs and click to change the mode)
- Reload Minecraft twice
- Reload Computer (Shut completely down)
- Try getting another launcher
- Use the latest normal Minecraft version, no clients/modifications
- Remove background tabs/misc. Open applications
If this does not work then try stopping lag because it probably crashes (Like it does when I have Minecraft and Terraria open) here are some tips to secure the lag
- Remove background tabs/misc. Open applications
- Turn down render distance (chunks)
- Sometime helps if you fiddle around with the settings
- Turn clouds off
- Graphics: Normal I think you should have
If it is your mom's computer it may be filled with all her work on the desktop and stuff so delete un-needed pictures (screenshots) just organize your computer in general, if this does not work check your storage (Preferences > Storage) if it is low I am sorry to announce but I do not think it would be achievable otherwise if all this stuff does not work, it is probably slowing the computer down enough (minecraft) oh yeah last suggestion, don't use a MacBook (if it is a laptop I dunno if it is or not) but if it is I recommend buying a cooling pad that hooks up to your computer, it helps A BUNCH! Good Luck
